What is a steel mace?

Beginning in the 13th century, elite warriors and wrestlers of the time would train with heavy Gada Maces, a club or blunt mace from the Indian subcontinent, to condition their bodies for battle. The first Gada Mace used in training was nothing more than a stone attached to a bamboo staff; however, when made for battle, the Gada Mace were often made of iron or bronze. Today, the Onnit Steel Mace follows the same design principles as those original Gada Maces but is meticulously crafted from high-quality steel.

The Steel Mace’s disproportionate weight displacement activates a myriad of stabilizer muscles surrounding our joints. This makes the tool one of the most effective ways to build core and rotational strength.

Get Started

The steel mace is a very challenging and exciting piece of equipment to master. Many of the exercises are perfected best at a lower weight, so if you are planning to utilize the full gamut of possibilities we recommend starting with a lightweight (10lbs or 15lbs) and working up. The great thing about the mace is that if you want to increase the resistance, you can slide your hand closer to the end of the handle. Check out our iconic line of perfectly balanced, hand sculpted Steel Maces.
